Exercise

Why is Aerobic Exercise so Good For You?
Greater Elasticity of veins
Greater return volume to the heart
Artries have muscular walls take blood away
Veins have "Venus pump" check valves to send blood back to heart from foot
exercise helps this process, by keeping the elasticity
Increase Capillary density
more capillaries are like more roads to a city (more roads=more supplies) makes the body more efficient
In crease mitochondrial density
Increase Endorphans--"runners high"
Aerobic Excerxise delays or even prevents the onset of dementia

The Big Three
Diet Rest Exercise

FITT Principle
Frequency
Three days per week
Intensity
65%-85% of predicted maximum heart rate
Time minimum of 30 minutes per exercise session
Type run walk x-country bike swim

Youth Activity
Most active
High volume
Short bouts
Moderate to high intensity
Not for a long time but for high intensity in a short period, they go hard and recover quickly

Classroom Tools for Evaluation skills in PE

Skill checklists--is the most common
Student Fitness Logs
Written Test--cognitive domain

Evaluating Fitness in Kids
4 tests:
Presidents Test
ACSM
OSPI Fitness Assessment
Fitness Gram
  1. Aerobic Capacity
    1. PACER-20 meter shuttle or one mile run/walk (Pogressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run)
    1. Run 20 meters between beeps, beeps get faster, if you miss the mark for two beeps your out.
    2. Allow to cool down by walking and stretching
  1. Body Composition
    1. BMI
  1. Muscular Strength & Endurance
    1. Abdominal Strength curl/3sec
    1. Upper Body Strength push up/3 sec
  1. Flexibility
    1. Sit and Reach method

May 6th--Health and Instructional Design

Physical Activity and Cognition

Psycho-motor
Cognitive-motor
Perceptive-motor

  • Raising the heart rate increases glucose to the brain (Blyades)
  • Gross Motor movement balances brain chemicals that calms and elevates self-esteem
  • Bodily Kinesthetic is one of the eight multiple intelligences (Gardner)
  • Movement is the body's natural reward system (Jensen)
  • Cross Lateralization strengthens neural connections
  • Exercise reduces stress by lower cortisol (pre-fight or flight) levels that damage cells ... exercise has the same effect and benefit as antidepressant medications or alcohol (Rayney).
  • People who are most aerobically fit generally have the fastest cognitive responses (Van Praag).
  • Lifetime physical activity may grow new brain cells (Gage).
Before puberty kids can be lumped together as far as PE as they get older and phenotypes are expressed they have different needs.

Instructional Design

Scope--depth and breadth
Sequence--order, not teaching the same thing in 2nd grade as 3rd grade

Learning Domains--
Cognitive(Think)-understand, comprehend, demonstrate knowledge of...the rules and regulations of the game
Affect (Feel/Socialization)--
Psyco-motor (Move)- verbs catch, dribble, run

PE Lesson Plan
  1. warm up game
  2. fitness activity

Somatotypes

Endomorph- more rotund
Mesomorph- muscular build
Ectomorph- lanky skinny

Physical maturity has a strong impact on performance...
Rapid growth is rapid motor performance
under matured girls tend to perform better-because of higher body fat
whereas early developing boys perform better

Aerobic Capacity

Children need fun to keep excersizing, than they don't even notice work...put them on the treadmill for 30 secs and they are out.
