May 6th--Health and Instructional Design

Physical Activity and Cognition

Psycho-motor
Cognitive-motor
Perceptive-motor

  • Raising the heart rate increases glucose to the brain (Blyades)
  • Gross Motor movement balances brain chemicals that calms and elevates self-esteem
  • Bodily Kinesthetic is one of the eight multiple intelligences (Gardner)
  • Movement is the body's natural reward system (Jensen)
  • Cross Lateralization strengthens neural connections
  • Exercise reduces stress by lower cortisol (pre-fight or flight) levels that damage cells ... exercise has the same effect and benefit as antidepressant medications or alcohol (Rayney).
  • People who are most aerobically fit generally have the fastest cognitive responses (Van Praag).
  • Lifetime physical activity may grow new brain cells (Gage).
Before puberty kids can be lumped together as far as PE as they get older and phenotypes are expressed they have different needs.

Instructional Design

Scope--depth and breadth
Sequence--order, not teaching the same thing in 2nd grade as 3rd grade

Learning Domains--
Cognitive(Think)-understand, comprehend, demonstrate knowledge of...the rules and regulations of the game
Affect (Feel/Socialization)--
Psyco-motor (Move)- verbs catch, dribble, run
